The Tonie Campbell Project For Literacy

Who is Tonie Campbell:
Award winning Children’s book author. Parent to child with learning disability. Former professional athlete.

Program’s Purpose:
To increase literacy amongst our youth by providing mentorship, books, reading materials and awareness events.

The Tonie Campbell Project for Literacy is a campaign dedicated to strengthening basic skills among children by creating and providing celebrity and community role-models, reading materials, books, reading events and sponsored fundraising events within the designated school’s community. Working with companies, individuals and volunteer supporters, we are making a difference by encouraging the value of a lifelong learning skill, reading.
TCPL Foundation's programs encourage parents and extended family members to read aloud with young children, with special emphasis on the first five years, for the educational and emotional benefits to all involved. Emphasis on parent participation is placed on educating parents and caregivers about the importance of reading aloud with children in their preschool years in order to lay the foundation and establish the "roots" which produce successful readers as the child grows.

Mentorship Programs

  • Tonie’s “Pals” (Professional Athlete Literacy Superstars) – Celebrities donate their time to participate in reading events at local schools and off site events. Celebrities from professional sports teams, Olympic sports and local television and community personalities meet and greet young readers and share life experiences and passages from their favorite books.
  • TC’s “Top Cat” Readers, youth reading role models program - A unique community service program, which empowers high school youth to transform their communities by volunteering to read aloud with elementary and preschool children.

Program Features:
Fosters the joy of reading in children.
Provides children with positive youth role models from their community.
Develops responsibility and communication skills in youth.
Improves youth academic participation and performance.
Promotes use of the public library

How TC’s “Top Cat” Readers works - The program is a unique community service program that facilitates high school youth to read aloud with preschool and elementary school children on a weekly basis at childcare centers, middle and elementary schools in their local community. Youth volunteer their time after school, for an entire semester, to read books they select from the public library. The program is community-based and intergenerational in its use of adult community members who participate in the program as Guest Readers and Community Coordinators.

Our goal is to have 100 “Top Cat” Readers in the city per school semester. Benefits of participating in the program:

For children:

  • Instills the joy of reading in children
  • Children are better prepared for school
  • Provides opportunity to be exposed to the English language
  • Children develop an interest in reading
  • Increases imagination and attention span
  • Provides positive youth role models for children
  • Introduces quality children's literature through the use of the public library

For youth volunteers:

  • Learn the value of reading aloud with children
  • Provides youth with the responsibility of role modeling for young children
  • Read more for their own enjoyment
  • Increases desire to complete high school
  • Provides positive alternatives for after school time
  • Improves English skills and self-confidence
  • Gives youth the opportunity to transform their community through reading
