Visualize a playground field covered in weeds, rocks and even broken glass…hardly a place for children to play safely in their neighborhood. That was the scene at the Boys & Girls Club of San Diego, Clairemont branch. Now fast forward to December 9, 2008 when Kassim Osgood through his Team KO program teamed up with the Home Depot – NFL Neighborhood MVP Program.
Literally overnight, the same field has been transformed by over 300 Home Depot & local community volunteers, building the new playground equipment, decorated with hopscotch games on the sidewalks, adorned with players' benches and reborn into a playground this community will be proud to use and call their own.
Kassim didn't just put his name on this project. He was out there getting muddy and dirty with a hundred Home Depot volunteers. “I was a product of the Boys and Girls Club. I know how important it is for communities to have a safe haven for kids to play! This is exciting for me to be able to roll up my sleeves, get a little dirty and add my personal touch!”
Through this program, Kassim was honored by the NFL as a Community Leader recognizing his dedication to community outreach and making a difference in 2007 & 2008.. Only sixteen other similar projects were completed this football season. Kassim is a perfect fit for rebuilding this facility that serves over 2500 neighborhood youth as he so eloquently states, “my general motivating factor is fun. And that's what today all is about!”
