AFE, along with our partners Wal-Mart and The Pepsi Bottling Group, hosted two special events in May 2004 to raise money for athletic programs at Oceanside and Vista High Schools.
The first event was Darren Carrington’s 1st Annual Fun Run/Walk, on Saturday, May 8, 2004. Over 150 people participated in the walk, which started at the Vista Wal-Mart store. The route was a 2.2 mile loop that walkers went through twice. The Vista fire department was in attendance with their fire truck, as were contestants from this year's Miss Vista Beauty Pageant. Wal-Mart and Pepsi graciously supplied food and drinks for attendees. AFE’s athlete volunteers, including Darren Carrington, Leon White, Kevin Mitchell, Tonie Campbell, Karl Wilson, Lonny Mitchell & Tam Do were there as well to participate and sign autographs. Each walker paid a $20 entry fee, which includes their registration, an event t-shirt and food and drinks.
On Monday, May 10, the festivities continued with Karl Wilson’s Celebrity Golf Classic, which took place at the Twin Oaks Golf Course. 85 golfers joined AFE and our athletes for a wonderful day on the course followed by a celebratory awards dinner. At the dinner C.S. Keys event MC joined Steven Haynes, Founder/President of AFE, in we giving away over 60 different prizes, including X-Boxes, televisions and Padres tickets, in our opportunity drawing.
Our first annual fundraisers for high schools in the North County were a success. As a result of these programs and our partnership with Pepsi and Wal-Mart, AFE has provided $40,000 in support for Oceanside and Vista High Schools this year, both in cash and sporting equipment.
Our goal for the 2005 walk is to get every student athlete at the 2 high schools we choose to participate by inviting 10 walkers each to join their team. This kind of participation would provide all of the funding necessary to maintain the athletic programs at those schools and purchase new sporting equipment as needed. With our schools in a budget crisis, extracurricular activities, including sports, are often the first programs to be cut or reduced.
AFE is committed to assisting schools and organizations with equipment purchases and fundraising program that support interscholastic athletics. Research and statistics show that team-building activities such as organized athletics teach children how to work together, develop discipline, dedication and character. Most important, such programs create an environment in which youth learn to set and accomplish realistic goals, participate in wellness activities that reduce stress and channel energy and aggression towards a constructive and productive result. Sports are, essentially, a “healthy gang.”
Please join us October 29, 2005 for Darren's "Walk for Christ" to raise funds for his "A Way Out" Scholarship & Mentorship program.
